Volunteer opportunities:
Animal Care Assistant Seasonal (March-October)
Minimum age required - 18. You must have all vaccinations current, must have your own health insurance and no immune-compromised diseases. If you’re looking for a ‘hands on job’ this is the job for you. You will be doing the regular every day cage cleaning, washing dishes, preparing meals, handling animals, nursing baby squirrels, hand feeding baby birds, and doing laundry. The day is divided into three shifts: morning (8-12), afternoon (12-4), and evening (4-8). We ask for a COMMITMENT to one shift of 4 hours per week minimum, for the whole busy season, March through October. Training will be provided during your shift.
Bedding Maintenance Specialist (Otherwise known as the charming, courageous person who does the animals' laundry). Seasonal (March-October)
We desperately need people willing to do the animals' laundry! Animal care assistants have no time to do the laundry because caring for the animals occupies all their time, this results in the laundry accumulating in many many many baskets! The laundry needs to be hose, soak in bleach and taken to the laundromat. You actually have a great view of the woods while working on the hosing!
Cage Builder
We need outdoor cages for wildlife. When the animals are ready to go outside for physical conditioning and acclimatization they have specific caging requirements. We always need more new cages for birds and mammals. They can be build on-site and off-site depending on the size. Carpentry experience necessary.
Grant Research and Writing Specialist
Help us find the economic means to sustain our wildlife rehabilitation efforts. You would find local or national organizations willing to give grants to animal welfare organizations and fill out the documentation requested by them. We have a business plan with Lehigh WildCare goals and operational protocols to facilitate the process. Experience in research and writing grants necessary.
Fundraising Specialist
We need money to take care of the animals. You could help them planning and performing fundraising efforts.
Rescue and Transportation
You could get a permit to go wherever a wild animal is in trouble in our area, rescue it, and transport it to our facility or to a veterinarian. Many animals don't get the help necessary for lack of people willing to go the "extra mile". You could help solve this problem. To obtain a rescue and transportation permit from the PA Game Commission you would have to volunteer as an animal care assistant for one season (March-October) to get the training necessary. Then, with the licensed rehabilitator's sponsorship, you would have to pass a written test.
Supplies Assistant Seasonal (March-October)
You could help us to keep all supplies available at all times during the busy season (March-October). Taking care of the animals is a full time job, just the baby birds need to eat every 15 or 20 minutes! If we had a person dedicated to go to the store to get food and cleaning supplies when need it, it would save time to the volunteers that are taking care of the animals. You could also help us to find the best sources, the best prices, and of course, to find donated items! Must have valid PA driver license.
Volunteer Coordinator
We need a person to recruit volunteers and interns through adds in newspapers and colleges. To help preparing our monthly volunteer meetings for about 10 persons, and plan our annual reunion for about 30. To assist to training opportunities offered by the Volunteer Center of the Lehigh Valley. To develop new volunteer opportunities, and to create evaluation forms. Minimum age required - 18. Experience on volunteer management desirable but not required.
